Santa Barbara, CA - After falling behind 2-0 in the match, the UC Riverside volleyball team won the final three sets on Saturday evening to complete the come-from-behind 3-2 victory at UC Santa Barbara in Big West Conference play at The Thunderdome.
The Gauchos (11-9, 4-3) won a tough first-set 27-25 before winning easily in the second set 25-15. It looked as if the Highlanders (5-16, 2-5) would fall in three as they were down 25-24 at match-point in the third set, but rallied for three straight points to win 27-25. In the fourth, UCR took a 25-19 win and completed the comeback winning 15-12 in the fifth set.
The Highlanders victory over the Gauchos is the first in the program's Division I history and first since November 21, 1975.
After dropping the first two sets, UC Riverside forced 13 ties scores in the third set. UCSB led at match-point twice at 24-23 and 25-24, but the Highlanders used kills by Shelby LeDuff and Annishia McKoy respectively to tie it up on both occasions.
Tied at 25, an attack error by UCSB's Stacey Schmidt gave UCR the lead, and a kill from UCR setter Katie Meyers sealed the 27-25 victory.
UC Riverside tied the match at 2-2 in the fourth set by taking an early seven-point lead and never letting the Gauchos back in, winning 25-19.
In the final set, the Highlanders opened with a 3-1 advantage, but the Gauchos scored three straight to tie it at 4-4 and forcing UCR to call timeout.
After the break, UC Riverside took a 9-7 lead which forced UCSB into a timeout. The Highlanders proceeded to go up 12-8 capped off by an Amanda Vialpando kill, but UC Santa Barbara scored three consecutive to get within one, 12-11.
After a UCR timeout, kills from Megan Reza and Vialpando gave the Highlanders a 14-11 match-point lead, and two plays later Vialpando's 19th kill of the night sealed the come-from-behind 3-2 victory, 15-12.
Three Highlanders recorded double-digit kills led by Vialpando's 19, LeDuff's 18, and Reza's 12.
