Box Score - Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Riverside 2
Fullerton, CA - Double-digit kills from Amanda Vialpando and Shelby LeDuff was not enough on Saturday night as the UC Riverside volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision at Cal State Fullerton in Big West Conference action.
The Highlanders (5-19, 2-8) lost the first set 25-19 but rallied back to win the next two sets 25-20 and 26-24. The Titans (10-13, 5-6) then won the fourth set 25-20, and closed out the match with a 15-6 fifth-set win.
After trading points to open the first set, Cal State Fullerton turned a 6-6 tie into a 10-6 lead. From there, the Titans opened up an eight-point advantage, 18-10, en route to a 25-19 victory.
Tied at 17 late in the second set, UC Riverside scored five consecutive on two Annishia McCoy service aces and kills by LeDuff and Vialpando to go up 22-17. The Titans then cut it to two, 22-20, forcing UCR to call timeout, but it was a timeout well spent as a Katie Meyers kill, an attack error by CSF's Kayla Neto, and another Vialpando kill gave the Highlanders a 25-20 win.
It looked as if the Titans would go up 2-1 in the match as the Highlanders trailed at set-point 24-21 in the third set.
With Megan Reza serving, however, UC Riverside scored five straight points on two CSF errors, two kills from LeDuff, and a Reza service ace to rally back for the 26-24 victory.
The Highlanders could not win the fourth set as Fullerton tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-20 win. In the final set, UCR scored first, but it would be its only lead of the set as the Titans limited the Highlanders to just six points.
Vialpando recorded a game-high 19 kills to lead the Highlanders, while LeDuff added 13.
The Highlanders return home to the Student Rec Center on Friday, November 4 for a 7:00 pm match against Pacific.
