UCR Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener 66-46 At ASU

Tempe, AZ - The UC Riverside women's basketball team began the 2011-12 campaign on Friday afternoon with a 66-46 loss at perennial NCAA Tournament participant Arizona State.
ASU (1-0) outshot the Highlanders (0-1) 50.9 percent to 29.2 percent for the game, while dominating play in the paint 24-8, and from the bench, 27-9.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham led UC Riverside with a game-high 14 points while Jessica Ogunnorin added 13 on 6-of-10 shooting. Kimberly Brandon led the Sun Devils with 11 points.
After falling behind 10-2 early in the first half, the Highlanders cut the lead to three, 12-9, as Nottingham scored five straight points and Ogunnorin added a layup.
The Sun Devils then held UC Riverside scoreless for a five minute span as ASU mounted a 25-10 lead. Two Nottingham free throws ended the drought, but Arizona State ended the half leading 41-20.
ASU hit just under 60 percent of its shots in the first half while the Highlanders connected on just 6 of 25 shots for 24 percent.
UCR played the Sun Devils evenly in the second half, though, outscoring them 26-25. UCR also increased its field goal percentage in the half, hitting 34.8 percent.
Arizona State went up by as much as 27 points in the second half, 55-28, with 13:37 remaining, but UCR cut it to 19, 62-43, capped off by two Jamila Williams free throws. The teams traded points the rest of the way as the Sun Devils won 66-46.
The 20-point loss for the Highlanders is the largest since UC Santa Barbara earned a 22-point win, 59-37, on February 12, 2011.
