Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team returned to the Student Recreation Center on Friday night with a 3-1 loss to Cal Poly in Big West Conference action.
The Mustangs (12-16, 7-8) won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-16, but the Highlanders (7-22, 4-11) rallied in the third to win 25-21. The fourth set produced nine tie scores and three lead changes with Cal Poly earning the 25-23 victory to complete the 3-1 win.
Bianca Endersby hit a whopping .458 on the night while recording 13 kills. Shelby LeDuff added 13 kills while Amanda Vialpando led the team with 17. Cal Poly's Jennifer Keddy led all players with 18 kills.
After four tie scores through the first seven points in set one, the Highlanders fell behind as Cal Poly scored four consecutive to go up 11-7. With the Mustangs leading 18-14, UC Riverside capitalized on two Cal Poly errors and a Megan Reza kill to get within one, 18-17.
The Mustangs called timeout, and proceeded to go back up by three points as they held on for the 25-21 victory.
Tied at three in the second set, the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run to go up 9-3. UCR cut the lead to three, 13-10, but could not stop another Cal Poly rally as the Mustangs pushed their advantage to 18-10 as they won 25-16.
The Highlanders found their stride in the third set as they hit .341 as a team. The set was very much of a back and forth battle with 15 tie scores through 17-17.
UC Riverside turned the 17-17 tie into a 21-17 advantage thanks to two Vialpando kills, one LeDuff kill, and a Cal Poly error. However, the Mustangs made a run to close to 21-20, but the Highlanders responded with three straight points to lead at set-point 24-20.
A UCR error made it 24-21, but an Endersby kill on the next play sealed the 25-21 victory for UC Riverside.
In the fourth set, Cal Poly went up 10-5, but the Highlanders scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 15-12 lead. The Mustangs would counter with three straight to tie the set at 15.
The teams then traded points until 23-23. Unfortunately for UC Riverside, though, Cal Poly used two consecutive kills to win 25-23 and complete the 3-1 victory.
The Highlanders conclude the 2011 season on Saturday, November 19 with a 7:00 pm match against UC Santa Barbara. It is also Senior Night, as UCR will honor its lone senior, Katie Meyers, prior to tip.
