Riverside, CA - Amanda Vialpando recorded 17 kills and Shelby LeDuff added 16 for the UC Riverside volleyball team on Saturday evening as they swept the UC Davis Aggies 26-24, 25-19 and 25-16 in Big West Conference action.
The Highlanders (6-20, 3-9) snapped a four-match skid and picked up their first victory over the Aggies (20-8, 6-7) since October 10, 2008.
The Highlanders led 23-21 late in the first set, but UCD scored three straight to go up at set-point, 24-23. A Vialpando kill tied the set at 24, and consecutive service aces by UCR setter Katie Meyers lifted the Highlanders to a 26-24 win.
In the second set, UCR led wire-to-wire, opening up a 9-3 lead early in the frame. With the Highlanders leading at set-point 24-15, the Aggies prolonged the set late by scoring four straight to get with five at 24-19.
That forced UCR Coach Ron Larsen to call timeout, but it was a timeout well spent as after the break, Megan Patterson's kill put the Highlanders up 2-0 in the match.
UC Riverside led for the entire third set, taking a commanding 24-14 match-point lead. UC Davis scored the next two points, but it wasn't enough as LeDuff's kill sealed the 25-16 victory for the Highlanders.
Vialpando and LeDuff both recorded double-doubles for UCR, recording 12 digs apiece to go along with their kills.
UC Riverside now travels to UC Irvine on Wednesday, November 9 for a 7:00 pm match in Irvine, CA.
