Box Score - Washington State 74, UC Riverside 35
Pullman, WA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team traveled to the Pac-12's Washington State on Sunday afternoon following a two-week break from competition, but the Cougs went on a 23-0 run early in the second half as they defeated the Highlanders 74-35.
UC Riverside (1-7) was down eight points at the break and trailed by seven, 28-21, just 1:42 into the second half, but Washington State (6-4) used a 23-0 run over the next six minutes to blow open the game, 51-21. A Natasha Hadley jumper put a stop to the run, but WSU increased its advantage to 43, 71-28, with just over three minutes left in the game as they won 74-35.
The Highlanders 35 points scored is a season-low and ties the program's Division I record for fewest points scored in a single-game (35 vs. Eastern Washington on Dec. 17, 2002).
In the first period, two Hadley jumpers were the only Highlanders points early on as the Cougars went up 15-4 with 9:42 left in the half. UCR scored four consecutive after that with a Jessica Ogunnorin free throw and three-pointer to cut the lead to seven, 15-8, at the 7:04 mark.
Washington State pushed its lead back to double-figures, 20-10, a minute and a half later, but a 5-0 run by the Highlanders closed the gap to 20-15, capped off by a Jazzmin Lewis three-pointer with 3:05 remaining. The Cougs used a three-point play with 2:48 left to go up 23-15 as that score held heading into the half.
UCR's 15 points scored in the first half is tied for the third-fewest points in a half in Highlanders DI history.
For the game, WSU hit 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field while limiting UC Riverside to just 21.3 percent (13-of-61). UCR's .213 percentage is a season-low and the second-lowest field goal percentage in the program's Division I history. The previous low was .203 at Iowa State on December 19, 2005.
The 39-point loss is the greatest margin of defeat since DePaul defeated the Highlanders by 44 points, 91-47, on November 27, 2010.
Hadley led UC Riverside with a game-high 15 points while Lewis added eight and Ogunnorin had seven.
The Highlanders next play at the University of Idaho on Thursday, December 15 for a 6:00 pm PST tip in Moscow, ID.
