Moscow, ID - Led by a career-high 28 points and 13 rebounds from guard Tre'Shonti Nottingham, the UC Riverside women's basketball team snapped a four-game skid by defeating the Idaho Vandals 70-57 on Thursday evening at the Cowan Spectrum.
The Highlanders (2-7) led by as many as 23 points in the second half, but the Vandals (3-7) outscored them 30-20 over the remainder of the period. It wasn't enough, however, as UCR withstood the late rally to earn the 70-57 victory.
The 70 points scored by the Highlanders is the second-highest of the season and the most since the team scored 76 in its victory over CSU Bakersfield on November 19.
After Nottingham, UCR had balanced scoring as Jessica Ogunnorin scored nine, and both Natasha Hadley and Leah Washington added eight apiece.
Nottingham scored 11 of UCR's 29 points in the first period as the team forced 12 Vandals turnovers, resulting in 17 points off the miscues.
Idaho took an early 3-0 lead and led 7-6 at the 14:34 mark, but Jazzmin Lewis' three-pointer on the next play gave UCR a 9-7 lead. Up 13-12 with 9:30 left in the half, UCR went on a 9-0 run as the team pushed their advantage to double-digits, 22-12, with 5:18 left.
After a Vandals free throw cut the lead to three possessions, 22-13, the Highlanders scored seven of the next 10 points to conclude the period, taking a 29-16 lead into the break.
UC Riverside opened the second half hitting 5-of-6 from the field while limiting the Vandals to 0-for-4. The Highlanders increased their advantage to 23 points, 50-27, with 12:16 remaining in the half.
However, UCR's shooting cooled off after that point as Idaho closed the gap to 16, 52-36, with 9:23 to go. The lead stayed between 16 and 18 points until the four minute mark when the Vandals cut the lead to 13, 58-45, with 3:42 left. UCR pushed its advantage back to 17, but Idaho continued to rally, cutting the lead to 10, 67-57, with 26 seconds remaining.
But the rally was too late as Nottingham hit three free throws to seal the victory for UC Riverside.
For the game, UCR hit 39.3 percent (22-of-56) of its shots while limiting Idaho to 25.8 percent shooting (17-of-66).
The Highlanders conclude their road trip at No. 25 nationally ranked Gonzaga on Saturday, December 17 for a 6:00 pm tip in Spokane, WA.
