Reno, NV—The Nevada Wolf Pack brought too much offensive firepower with them Saturday afternoon connecting on 53.3 percent of their shots from the field including 60.0 percent in the second half as they pulled away from the Highlanders after the break on their way to a 71-47 victory. (Box Score)
The Wolf Pack (8-3) had their offense in sync in the early going as they connected on seven of their first 10 shots from the floor in building a 22-8 lead over the first eight-plus minutes of play. On the other side of the ball, UC Riverside (4-6) was struggling to get its offense going as they missed 14 of their first 17 shots.
A BJ Shearry reverse lay up and Robert Smith three-pointer cut the lead to single digits at 22-13 with just over eight minutes to go in the first period. Smith scored on UC Riverside's next possession to cut the advantage to seven, and Phil Martin hit three free throws to bring the Highlanders to within six, 24-18, with 6:25 on the clock.
The UCR defense tightened up over that span as the Wolf Pack misfired on their next five shots and 15 of their final 19 of the period. Nevada scored 11 of the final 15 points of the half, however, including five from the free throw line to take a 35-22 lead into the locker room.
Unfortunately, the second half began in much the same way as the first as Nevada scored 19 of the first 25 points of the period. The Wolf Pack connected on 12 of 20 shots in the final 20 minutes of action leading by as many as 29 points.
Olek Czyz and Malik Story led the Pack with 15 points each, while Dario Hunt chipped in with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Deonte Burton scored 10 points. Kareem Nitoto was the lone member of the Highlanders in double figures scoring a game-high five points.
UC Riverside's season-long trend of allowing more free throw attempts than they take continued as the Wolf Pack went 19 of 30 from the charity stripe, and the Highlanders went just five of nine.
UCR remains on the road this week as they travel to San Diego State for a Monday, 7 pm meeting with the Aztecs.
