Box Score - No. 25 Gonzaga 83, UC Riverside 56
Spokane, WA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team had its five-game road trip end on Saturday evening with an 83-56 loss at nationally ranked No. 25 Gonzaga in front of a crowd of 5,246 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The Zags (8-2) are the first nationally ranked team the Highlanders have faced since UCR traveled to No. 22 Kansas on December 20, 2009.
UC Riverside drops to 2-8 on the season, tying the 2007-08 squad for the second-fewest wins through 10 games in the program's Division I history.
The Highlanders and Bulldogs traded buckets in the early going with the Zags taking a 10-8 lead 4:16 into the game. Gonzaga then went on a 15-2 run over the next 4:37 to go up 25-10.
UC Riverside countered as a Tre'Shonti Nottingham layup at the 10:41 mark started a 7-0 run. Natasha Hadley added two free throws for the Highlanders and Nottingham hit one from beyond the arc to make it a 25-17 game with 9:03 remaining in the half.
The Bulldogs scored four consecutive after that as their lead stayed between 10 and 13 points for the next six minutes. A Hadley jumper with 3:02 left in the half cut the Gonzaga advantage to 35-24, but GU ended the period on an 8-0 run as they went into the locker room leading 43-24.
The Highlanders outshot the Zags in the half, 45.0 percent (9-of-20) to 41.9 percent (18-of-43), but the Bulldogs went 4-of-10 from three-point range while UCR hit just 1-of-4. The Bulldogs also recorded 21 rebounds on the offensive glass for 16 second-chance points.
In the second period, Gonzaga opened with eight straight points as the lead grew to 51-24.
With the Highlanders trailing 60-31, the team went on a 17-2 run including scoring 15 straight points over the next 3:20 to cut the lead to 14, 62-48. UCR hit seven field goals during that span and forced seven Zags turnovers to close the gap.
However, the Bulldogs countered with an 8-0 run of their own and scored 13 of the next 14 points to go back up, 75-49, with 4:46 left in the game. UCR cut the lead to 20, 76-56 with 2:33 left in the game, but it was the last points the team would score as Gonzaga ended on a 7-0 run.
The Bulldogs increased their shooting in the second period to 63.0 percent (17-of-27) for an average of 50.0 percent for the game, while UCR hit 44.2 percent (23-of-52) of its shots for the game.
The Highlanders had balanced scoring as Nottingham led the team with 13 points while Hadley added 11, Dynese Adams had nine, and Briauna Linton and Kiara Harewood each added eight. Gonzaga's Haiden Palmer led all players with 21 points.
The 83 points scored by Gonzaga is the most UC Riverside has allowed all season and the most since DePaul scored 91 against them on November 27, 2010.
UC Riverside now returns home to host the Fresno State Bulldogs on Wednesday, December 21 for a 7 pm PST tip at the Student Recreation Center.
