Northridge, CA - After being down by 10 points at the half, the UC Riverside women's basketball team made it a game late, but could not prevail as they lost a Big West Conference matchup at Cal State Northridge 63-55 on Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders drop to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in Big West play, while the Matadors improve to 7-7, 2-0. This is the third straight season that UCR has started league play 0-2, but in both the previous years the team eventually posted an 11-5 mark in conference play.
UCR's Tre'Shonti Nottingham scored a game-high 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting including a 9-of-10 mark from the free throw line. Natasha Hadley added 15 points for the Highlanders, as the duo combined for 38 of the team's 55 points. Jessica Duarte led the Matadors with 19 points as two other players scored in double-figures.
Both teams were cold from the field to start the game, as UCR hit just 1-of-8 and Northridge was 1-of-7. However, the Matadors hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line to open a 7-2 lead four and a half minutes into play.
The Highlanders would eventually tie it at 11-11, and again at 15, when Cal State Northridge went on a 12-2 run opening up a 27-17 advantage.
Still down by 10, 29-19, with 5:09 left in the half, UC Riverside countered as Nottingham scored six consecutive to close the gap to four, 29-25, at the 3:42 mark. CSUN rallied back with a 6-0 run to push the margin back to double-digits, 35-25, as they entered halftime leading 39-29.
The Matadors ended up hitting 19-of-20 from the free throw line in the period while hitting just 30.3 percent (10-of-33) of their field goals. CSUN also forced 13 UCR turnovers and scored 18 points off those miscues.
Nottingham led all players in the first half with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Cal State Northridge scored the first bucket of the second half, but UCR put up six straight points to get within two possessions, 41-35, at the 17:14 mark.
The Matadors countered with a 6-0 run of their own to push the lead back to 12, 47-35, with just under 14 minutes remaining. CSUN's lead never dipped below nine points over the next nine minutes of play, but UC Riverside continued pressing and cut it to five, 58-53, with 2:57 remaining.
Northridge went back up by eight with 1:19 left, but a Hadley jumper made it six-point game, 61-55, just 14 seconds later. CSUN scored with 35 seconds left, and the Highlanders missed on their next possession as the Matadors held on for the 63-55 victory.
Neither team ended up with high field goal percentages, as UCR hit 19-of-57 (33.3 percent) to CSUN's 20-of-62 (32.3 percent).
