Neabors Career High Night Lifts UCR To 78-70 Win Over First-Place Mustangs

Riverside, CA - Rhaya Neabors scored a career-high 23 points and three other players scored in double figures to guide the UC Riverside women's basketball team (14-11, 7-5) to a 78-70 victory over league-leading Cal Poly on Saturday evening at the Student Recreation Center.
Neabors hit 9 of 14 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free throw line, besting her previous career-high by two points. Tre'Shonti Nottingham added 15 points while Brittany Waddell had 13 and Natasha Hadley scored a career-high 10 points.
Cal Poly's (14-10, 10-3) Rachel Clancy scored a game-high 29 points on 10 of 16 shooting including 5 of 6 from three-point range.
The game started slowly with the teams combining for just five points through the first two and a half minutes of play. The pace quickened after that juncture, however, as the Mustangs took a 23-16 lead at the 10:51 mark.
UCR would outscore Cal Poly 9-2 over the next five minutes, tying the game at 25 with just under five minutes left in the half. The Highlanders took their first lead since the early minutes at 30-29 after two Waddell free throws, and entered the break leading 37-33.
Clancy connected on 5 of 6 from the field including all three three-point attempts to lead all players with 13 points in the period, while Waddell had 10 to lead UCR.
In the second half, the lead changed four times and the game was tied five additional times as neither team could take a significant advantage. Tied at 62 with 7:11 remaining, UCR outscored the Mustangs 10-3 to take a 72-65 lead with just under four minutes left.
Cal Poly closed to two, 72-70, with 2:26 to go, but UCR held the Mustangs scoreless the rest of the way as they pushed the lead to eight to finish out the game.
The Highlanders hit 52.6 percent of their shots from the field while limiting Cal Poly to just under 40 percent.
