Highlanders Withstand Second Half Aggies Rally In 74-62 Road Victory

Davis, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team withstood a second half Aggies rally on Thursday evening and hit 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to hang on for the 74-62 win at UC Davis.
The Highlanders (15-11, 8-5) were tied with UC Davis for third in the Big West standings heading into Thursday's contest, but with the win move up to claim sole possession of third place with just three games to go.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham led all players with 25 points on 6 of 11 shooting including 10-10 from the free throw line. Alyssa Morris added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Rhaya Neabors had 14 points. Vicky Deely led UC Davis (18-8, 7-6) with 21 points.
The Highlanders shot efficiently from the field in the first half, hitting 55.0 percent of their shots including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. The Aggies scored the first bucket of the game, but UCR responded scoring the next seven straight on a free throw by Nicole Anderson and three pointers by Morris and Nottingham.
UC Riverside took its first double-digit lead at 17-7 on a Brittany Palmer fastbreak layup with just under 10 minutes in the half. The lead fluctuated between nine and 11 for the next couple minutes until the Highlanders outscored the Aggies 9-2 to take a 29-12 lead at the 2:11 mark.
UC Davis cut the lead to 12 a minute later as UCR took a 32-19 advantage into the break.
In the second half, UC Riverside built a 20-point margin, 52-32, capped off by two straight Neabors layups with 10:50 remaining. The Aggies made the game interesting going on a 13-2 run over the next four and a half minutes to cut the lead to just nine, 54-45, with 6:13 left.
UC Davis never got closer than nine points the rest of the way, however, as the Highlanders hit 11 of 12 from the free thow line down the stretch to hang on for the road victory.
Even though UCD forced 18 Highlanders turnovers, UC Riverside dished out 15 assists, had eight steals, and blocked seven shots while shooting 52.4 percent from the field. The Highlanders also limited the Aggies to 38.3 percent shooting including just 15 percent from beyond the arc.
The Highlanders continue their Northern California road trip on Saturday, February 26 with a 4:00 pm game at Pacific in Stockton, CA.
