UC Riverside 18, Sacramento State 2 - Box Score
Sacramento-The UC Riverside Baseball Team finally got its offense in gear Saturday afternoon as they exploded for 24 hits in the second game of a double header against Sacramento State in an 18-2 win. The Highlanders took game one in 11 innings by a score of 2-0.
Matt Andriese (1-0) continued UC Riverside's early-season habit of great starting pitching performances by allowing just three hits in eight innings of work in game one, but the Highlanders offense had yet to awaken scattering just four hits of their own through seven innings.
In the top of the eighth, Eddie Young single to center with one out, and moved to second on a balk. Ryan Goetz singled to right advancing Young to third, but Hornets relief pitcher Andrew Galvan picked Young off for the second out of the inning. Tony Nix drew a walk to put runners at first and second, but Justin Shults flied out to right to end the threat.
Dustin Emmons relieved Andriese to start the ninth and pitched two perfect innings striking out two.
In the top of the 11th, Goetz beat out an infield single to short, and Nix sacrificed him to second. After Shults walked and Dan Pellegrino struck out, David Andriese doubled to right center plating two.
Mitch Patito came in to close the game out in the bottom of the inning, allowing a lead-off single and a two-out walk before Kirby Young fouled out to third for the final out of the inning.
Matt Larkins (2-0) got the start for the Highlanders in the second game, and the Hornets touched him for two runs in the bottom of the first, but he settled down after that allowing just two more hits and no runs over the next five innings.
UCR got on the board in the top of the fourth when Justin Shults drilled a solo shot to right field cutting the Sacramento State advantage in half. The following inning Trevor Hairgrove singled to left center scoring Bart Stepanovich who opened the frame with his own single to left.
It was the top of the sixth, however, when UC Riverside blew the game open. Shults singled through the right side with one out, and Andriese moved him to third on a single up the middle. Bryan Horst then laid down a bunt single which scored Shults, and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Andriese scored on the same error.
Vince Gonzales followed with a single to center scoring Horst, and Stepanovich singled to center to put runners at first and second. After Phil Holinsworth flew out to center, Goetz singled to left, Hairgrove got hit by a pitch, and Nix hit a grand slam over the left field fence. By the time the dust had settled, the Highlanders led 10-2. They tacked on eight more runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings for the 18-2 win.
The Highlanders and Hornets go at it again Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 pm PT.
