#4 UC Davis 44, #3 UC Riverside 39 - Box Score
Anaheim, CA—A swarming Aggies defense forced the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team into 26 turnovers, and the Highlanders went scoreless for a six-minute stretch late in the second half as UC Davis emerged with a 44-39 victory in the semifinals of the ampm Big West Conference Basketball Tourament.
A Lauren Juric lay up with 13:04 to go tied the game at 30 erasing what had once been an 11-point Highlanders advantage. Five minutes later, Paige Mintun's lay up gave the Aggies their first lead since early in the first half, 34-32.
A Rhaya Neabors jumper with 7:36 on the clock knotted things up again at 34, but that was the last points UC Riverside would score for more than six minutes. The Highlanders missed three front ends of one-and-ones during that stretch, while Davis scored eight straight to build their largest lead of the ballgame at 42-34.
Neighbors hit a three-pointer with 1:26 to go to stop the Aggies run, but a pair of Heidi Heintz free throw with 48 seconds remaining effectively ended the game.
The Highlanders made just 26.1 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes of play including 3 of 13 from long distance. UC Davis didn't shoot much better, hitting 37.0 percent of their shots in the second half, but they made nine of 10 free throws after the break to just four of seven for UCR which ultimately provided them with their margin of victory.
Both baskets had lids on them in the early going as the score was tied at two heading into the first media timeout with 5:20 gone in the game. The Highlanders were one of seven from the field, and the Aggies were one of 10. By the time the second media time out came around with 10:51 on the clock it was still just 7-5 UC Davis.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham's steal and fastbreak lay up with 9:51 tied the game and seemed to ignite the UCR offense. The Highlanders made seven of their next eight shots and scored the next 13 points to lead 18-7 before a Mintun jumper ended the run.
The Aggies began to get their offense on track shortly thereafter scoring the final six points of the period cutting the Highlanders halftime advantage to five, 20-15. The 15 points allowed by the UCR defense is second only to the nine points they allowed on November 26 against Morgan State.
Brittany Waddell led UC Riverside with nine points in the period making all four of her shots from the field, while Nottingham added seven. The Highlanders also forced UC Davis to miss 21 of its 27 shots in the first 20 minutes of play, but they were unable to take full advantage of that defensive effort thanks to 18 first half turnovers.
The Aggies scored the first points of the second half on a Hana Asano jumper, but the Highlanders quickly pushed their lead back out to seven, 26-19. UC Davis scored the next five points finally pulling even on Juric's layup that tied the score at 30.
Mintun led all scorers with 15 points while Waddell and Nottingham scored 13 and 12 respectively to pace UC Riverside.
