Long Beach, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team picked up a much-needed win over Long Beach State Sunday afternoon pounding out 20 hits in a 14-2 victory as they try to stay in the race for an upper division finish in the Big West. The win improves the Highlanders to 4-5 in conference, a game back of the Beach who own the fourth spot with a 5-4 mark.
Trevor Frank (2-1) got the turn on the hill for UCR, and he allowed just one hit in his first four innings of work. Meanwhile, the Highlanders were staking the sophomore right-hander to an 8-0 lead.
Trevor Hairgrove got things started in the top of the third beating out an infield single and advancing to second on an error by Dirtbags third baseman Michael Hill. A wild pitch moved Hairgrove to third, and Ryan Goetz's single to right made it 1-0 UC Riverside.
That ended LBSU starter Ryan Strufing's (2-1) day as Kyle Friedriche came into the game with Goetz on first. Justin Shults greeted Friedriche with a single to right moving Goetz to third, and Tony Nix doubled down the left field line to put the Highlanders up 3-0.
In the top of the fourth, Bart Stepanovich singled up the middle to start the frame, and one out later, Hairgrove singled to left to put runners at first and second, Goetz singled to center scoring Stepanovich, but Hairgrove was thrown out at third trying to take the extra base.
The Highlanders put the lead off runner on base again in the top of the fifth as Vince Gonzalez singled through the left side. After an Eddie Young ground out advanced Gonzalez to second, Cody Hough drew a walk, and Stepanovich reached on an error by shortstop Kirk Singer to load the bases. Phill Hollinsworth doubled to right scoring a pair and sending Branden Pinder to the mound to take over for Friedrichs. Hairgrove picked up his third hit in as many innings with a single to left which made it 8-0 Highlanders, before Pinder worked his way out of the inning.
The Beach finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth stringing together a pair of infield singles and a wild pitch to put runners on second and third. Jeff McNeil singled to left to make it 8-2 Highlanders, but those were the only runs of the day for the Dirtbags.
Frank faced the minimum nine batters over the next three innings before giving way to Mitch Patito in the ninth.
UC Riverside scored another run in the seventh and eighth, and put four more on the board in the top of the ninth for the 14-2 win.
