UC Riverside 11, UC Davis 4 - Box Score
Davis, CA—The UC Riverside baseball season came to an end Sunday afternoon a bit earlier than the Highlanders had hoped when the year began four months ago, but they went out on a winning note with an 11-4 victory over UC Davis.
UCR (29-23, 11-13) and UCD (18-36, 10-14) combined to score just six runs in the first two games of the series which included a 16-inning, 2-1 affair on Friday afternoon. The Highlanders nearly eclipsed that in the first inning Sunday as they hung a five spot on the board and chased Aggies starter Scott Chew after one inning of play.
Chew struggled with his command walking two batters, giving up three hits and committing a balk in his one inning on the day. He still might have gotten out of the inning with just two runs crossing the plate were it not for a throwing error by third baseman Justin Andrade that allowed a run to score and extended the Highlanders turn at bat.
UC Riverside scored two more in the top of the second as Ryan Goetz doubled down the right field line to open the inning, and Justin Shults ripped a home run to right center to make it 7-0 Highlanders.
Dustin Emmons (7-3) got the start for UC Riverside, but he struggled as well, working out of jams in the first and second that stranded two runners in each inning. The Aggies touched him for two runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth to cut the UCR advantage to four, 7-3.
The Highlanders got one run back in the top of the fifth as Tony Nix's doubled to left scored Phil Holinsworth, and two more in the sixth on a Vince Gonzalez RBI single and a Bryan Horst sacrifice fly.
Emmons was lifted in the bottom of the fourth replaced by Mark Garcia. Garcia allowed just two hits in 2.1 innings of work giving up a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Four other UCR relievers—Mitch Patito, Gavin Mills, Mike Wolford and Kevin Dickey—took to the mound throughout the remainder of the game allowing just one hit over the final 3.2 innings of play,
UC Riverside's final run of the game came on a Trevor Hairgrove RBI single up the middle that scored Holinsworth. Holinsworth finished the day a perfect five for five at the plate.
