After scoring just four points in the first half, Gardner exploded in the second, at one point accounting for 15 of the Terriers' 21 points in the half. The Highlanders trailed 48-47 with 10:47 remaining, but Gardner led BU on a 11-3 over the next three minutes run that boosted the Terriers into a 59-48 lead with 7:59 left. The lead blossomed to as many as 16 before the Highlanders got to within 11 with a Joey Knox layup in the final seconds.
The Terriers took a 34-29 lead into the intermission after a back-and-forth first half. The Highlanders hit 4-of-11 from the three point line (36.4%), but struggled from closer range, at 5-of-17 (29.4%). Hassan started off hot, draining three treys in the first three minutes of the game, but UCR was able to keep it close and eventually moved into the lead. UCR led 23-22 with 8:11 left, and 29-28 with 4:50 left. But the Highlanders went scoreless for the rest of the half while the Terriers tallied six to take the five point lead.
