
Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Fairfield For First Victory Of 2011

Berkeley, CA - UC Riverside volleyball picked up its first win of the 2011 season on Saturday in a thrilling 3-2 five-set victory over Fairfield in the final game of the Cal Molten Classic.
The Highlanders (1-2) won the first set 25-19 but fell in games two and three 28-26 and 27-25 respectively. Needing to win the fourth set to keep the match alive, UCR won 25-23, and in the decisive fifth set, they pulled away with the 15-8 victory.
Amanda Vialpando led all players with a career-high 26 kills, knotching her second double-double in three games as she added 14 digs. Shelby LeDuff recorded 19 kills and 12 digs for the Highlanders, while Bianca Endersby had 15 kills and 10 digs.
Down 18-15 in set one, a combination of Highlanders kills and Fairfield errors allowed UCR to score eight straight points, opening up the match 23-18. The Stags got one point back, but an Annishia McKoy kill made it 24-19, and her service ace on the next play lifted the team to a 25-19 win.
Set two was very much of a back-and-forth battle as there were 13 ties scores and 8 lead changes throughout. UCR was up 22-20 late in the set, but Fairfield scored three straight to go up 23-22.
UCR tied the set at 23 and led at set-point 24-23, but the Stags then tied it and went up 25-24. The Highlanders again tied the set at 25 and at 26, but Fairfield strung two points together at the end to win the 28-26 battle.
Tied 10-10 in the third set, the Highlanders scored nine of the next 12 points to go up 19-13. However, Fairfield rallied by scoring nine points to UCR's three, tying the set at 22. UC Riverside went up at set-point 24-23 and at 25-24, but the Stags tied the set in between each point before eventually winning 27-25.
Needing to win the fourth set to keep the match alive, the Highlanders rallied back from a 6-1 deficit to take a 17-15 lead. UCR never gave up their advantage the rest of the way, holding on for a 25-23 win.
After relinquishing the first point in the fifth set, the Highlanders jumped to a 4-1 lead and went up 11-6. Leading 14-8 at match-point, Vialpando's kill was the finishing touch for UCR's come-from-behind 3-2 victory.
Earlier in the day, UC Riverside dropped a 3-0 match to Florida International in the second game of the Cal Molten Classic.
