UC Riverside Volleyball Drops Home Opener To UMBC In Four Sets

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball team won the first set against UMBC on Monday afternoon 25-23, but fell in the next three 25-21, 26-24 and 25-17 as the Retrievers upended the Highlanders 3-1 at the Student Recreation Center.
Amanda Vialpando led all players with 17 kills while Shelby LeDuff added 10 kills and 14 digs. Katie Meyers and Jessica Moncayo also recorded double-digit digs, with 13 and 14 respectively.
UC Riverside (1-3) found themselves down 20-14 late in set one, but closed out by scoring 11 of the next 14 points to earn the 25-23 victory.
Down 23-20, Vialpando served for the last six straight Highlanders points as she recorded three aces during that span including the set-winner. Monique Holt added two kills during that run, with LeDuff recording one.
In set two, UMBC maintained a lead of between one and four points for the majority of the frame. The Highlanders never got closer than three late in the set as the Retrievers went on to win 25-21.
The Highlanders were up 11-5 early in the third set but saw UMBC rally to tie it at 12. From that point on, there were 11 tie scores the rest of the set as a see-saw battle ensued.
UCR took a 23-21 lead after two Vialpando kills, but UMBC scored three straight to take a 24-23 lead.
UC Riverside tied the set at 24 off an attack error by Hannah Schmidt, but two straight LeDuff errors lifted the Retrievers to a 26-24 victory.
In the fourth set, UCR fell behind early and never recovered as Maryland-Baltimore County cruised to a 25-17 win.
The Highlanders now head to the USD Invitational for three matches beginning Friday, September 2 in San Diego, CA.
