Volleyball Wins First Set But Can't Hang On As Utah Wins 3-1

Salt Lake City, UT - The UC Riverside volleyball team won the first set against Utah 25-21 on Saturday morning, but could not close out the match as the Utes won 3-1 in the second game of the Utah Invitational.
Amanda Vialpando recorded a game-high 17 kills while hitting a team-best .275 for the Highlanders (1-8). Shelby LeDuff added 12 kills while Megan Reza had four block assists.
After falling behind 2-0 to start the first set, UC Riverside scored four straight to take a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the set.
The Highlanders pushed their lead out to six midway through the set and kept an advantage of more than three points as a LeDuff kill closed out the 25-21 win.
Tied at 5-5 in the second set, Utah (5-3) scored four straight en route to a 20-5 run that resulted in a 25-10 victory.
The Highlanders fell behind early in the third set and never got closer than four as the Utes took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-18 victory.
Needing to win the fourth set to keep the match alive, UCR led early on but could not stop a 4-0 Utes run that made it 6-3. Utah continued its rally and opened up a 10 point margin late in the set as they won 25-13.
The Highlanders conclude the Utah Invitational with a 4:00 pm match against Eastern Michigan later on Saturday.
