Volleyball Tames Lions 3-0 In Hilton Stockton Invitational First Match

Stockton, CA—The UC Riverside volleyball team hit a season-best .255 as a team on Friday morning defeating Loyola Marymount 3-0 to open play at the Hilton Stockon Invitational at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
UCR's Shelby LeDuff led all players with 17 kills as she recorded a double-double adding 11 digs.
Amanda Vialpando had 11 kills for the Highlanders (2-9), while Megan Patterson had 13 digs and Katie Meyers added 10 digs and 38 assists.
The sets were competitive with 20 ties scores and 10 lead changes combined, as the Highlanders won by just two points each set: 26-24, 25-23 and 25-23.
UC Riverside was down 18-13 in the first set, but scored six of the next seven points to tie it at 19. The teams then traded points until 24-24, where consecutive kills by Annishia McKoy and Bianca Endersby gave UCR the 26-24 win.
After falling behind 4-0 to open the second set, UCR climbed back but never took a lead until three straight Vialpando kills made it 20-19.
LMU (5-5) tied the set at 21-21 and 22-22, but UCR went up at set-point 24-22 after a Kristen Van Dongen service ace.
The Lions closed to one, 24-23 after a Jasmine Rankins kill, but LeDuff returned with a kill of her own as the Highlanders took a 2-0 lead in the match.
UC Riverside again fell behind in the third set, down 17-11. After a timeout, the Highlanders rallied to take a 19-18 lead after outscoring Loyola Marymount 8-1.
The teams then traded points to set up a similar situation as the second set: UCR led 24-22, but LMU got within one, 24-23, before another LeDuff kill sealed the victory for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside defeated the Lions for the first time in the program's Division I history as their last victory came on September 18, 1985.
The Highlanders continue the tournament with a 5:00 pm match against CSU Bakersfield later on Friday.
