Spartans Stop Highlanders Streak With 3-1 Victory

Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team was looking to make it three in a row on Saturday as they faced off against San Jose State in the final game of the Hilton Stockton Invitational, but after winning the first set 25-21, the Highlanders could not hold on as the Spartans won 25-22, 25-16 and 25-14.
Amanda Vialpando led all players with 21 kills and 14 digs, recording her fourth double-double of the season, while Bianca Endersby added 14 kills for the Highlanders (3-10).
UCR was up 8-4 in the first set, but saw the Spartans (5-7) rally for seven straight points to take an 11-8 advantage. The Highlanders would tie it up at 15, and after five more tie scores, the blue and gold scored three straight to go up 23-20 after two Vialpando kills and one SJSU error.
The Spartans scored one to close the gap to 23-21, but two consecutive UCR points put the set away 25-21.
After trading points through 6-6 in set two, San Jose State went on a 4-0 run to lead 10-6. The Spartans maintained their lead and kept it more than two points until UCR tied it at 18-18.
The Highlanders had rallied back from deficits earlier in the tournament, but could not pull off another come-from-behind victory as SJSU held on for the 25-22 win to tie the match at one apiece.
San Jose State made quick work of the Highlanders in sets three and four, however, winning 25-16 and 25-14 respectively to complete its 3-1 win.
UC Riverside now returns home to the Student Recreation Center to open Big West Conference play with a 7:00 pm match against Cal State Northridge on Saturday, September 24.
