Irvine, CA—Leading UC Riverside to a 2-1 record at the Stockton Hilton Invitational, Amanda Vialpando captured this week’s Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors. This marks the first time a Highlander has earned this distinction since Angie Mitchell picked up the weekly award on Oct. 8, 2007.
Vialpando opened the weekend tournament with an 11-kill, seven-dig performance in UC Riverside’s 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount. Later that day she helped the Highlanders post their second consecutive sweep after registering a career-high .395 hitting percentage against Cal State Bakersfield.
Friday’s events marked the first time UC Riverside recorded back-to-back wins since Nov. 6 and 7, 2009, and it was the first time UCR swept consecutive matches since Aug. 30, 2008.
Also worth noting is that the Moreno Valley, CA, native notched her first of two double-doubles on the week with 19 kills and 11 digs against the Roadrunners. Her second double-double came the following day when she topped her previous performance with 21 kills and 14 digs in the
Highlanders’ 3-1 loss to San Jose State.
For the week, she averaged 5.1 kills and 3.2 digs per contest, while hitting .322. Vialpando’s efforts earned her a spot on the Hilton Stockton All-Tournament Team.
UC Riverside now returns home to the Student Recreation Center to open Big West Conference play with a 7:00 pm match against Cal State Northridge on Saturday, September 24.
