Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside volleyball team opened Big West Conference play on Saturday evening with a 3-0 loss to Cal State Northridge in front of a record crowd of 745 fans at the Student Recreation Center. The attendance shatters the previous UCR volleyball home attendance record of 625 set on October 27, 2001.
The first set saw 11 ties scores and four lead changes before the Matadors (7-6, 1-0) came away with the 27-25 victory. CSUN went on to sweep with 25-16 and 25-20 wins in the next two sets.
Amanda Vialpando and Shelby LeDuff accounted for 15 of the Highlanders (3-11, 0-1) 31 kills on the night. Jessica Moncayo tied for the game-high with 13 digs, while LeDuff added 12.
The first set was a back and forth battle as there were 10 ties scores from 16-16 through 25-25. The Highlanders led at set-point 24-23, but a service error by LeDuff tied the set at 24.
A CSUN attack error on the next play again put UCR up at set-point 25-24, but a service error, this time by Bianca Endersby, tied the set at 25. Cal State Northridge then used consecutive kills Britney Graff to close out the set with a 27-25 win.
With the Matadors leading 16-14 midway through the second set, the Highlanders committed five attack errors as CSUN rallied off seven straight points to go up 23-14.
A service error by Cal State Northridge's Monica McFarland put a stop to the run, but any rally the Highlanders could hope for was too late as the Matadors went on for the 25-16 win.
Down 16-13 in the third set, the Highlanders went on a 5-1 run to take an 18-17 lead. CSUN then scored four straight to go up 21-18 en route to its 25-20 victory.
The Highlanders now host San Diego State in a non-conference match on Sunday, September 25 at 3:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
