UC Riverside Volleyball Loses 3-2 Heartbreaker To Northeastern

San Diego, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team concluded the USD Invitational on Saturday afternoon with a heart breaking 3-2 loss to Northeastern.
The Highlanders (1-6) won the first two sets 26-24 and 27-25, but lost the next three sets 25-13, 25-23, and 15-7.
Shelby LeDuff led UCR with 16 kills and 15 digs, while Monique Holt added 14 kills and 11 digs. Two other Highlanders added double-digit kills as Bianca Endersby and Annishia McCoy both had 11.
Megan Patterson recorded 17 digs to lead UCR, while Megan Reza posted a game-high 5 blocks.
UCR led 8-1 early in the first set, but the Huskies came back to make it a close contest later in the frame. Tied at 21, UCR took a set-point lead at 24-21 after two Holt kills and one Patterson kill. However, three kills by Northeastern's Janelle Tucker tied the set at 24.
Another Holt kill gave the Highlanders a 25-24 lead, and an attack error by the Huskies lifted UCR to a 26-24 win.
The second set was a real battle as there were 10 tie scores and four lead changes. UCR was down 18-14 midway through the set, but rallied to take a 24-22 lead.
The Huskies scored three straight to take a 25-24 lead, but another Holt kill tied the set at 25. An attacking error by Northeastern gave UCR a 26-25 advantage, and an Endersby kill closed out the set as the Highlanders took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Northeastern took an early lead in set three and never looked back, cruising to a 25-13 win to close the match to 2-1.
Down 16-10 in the fourth set, UC Riverside closed the gap to one at 19-18. From that point on, the Huskies' lead was never higher than two, but UCR could not tie it up as Northeastern held on for the 25-23 win.
In the fifth and final set, Northeastern jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Highlanders capitalized on two Huskies errors and two LeDuff kills to take a 4-3 advantage.
Tied at 5-5, Northeastern rallied for eight straight points taking a 13-5 lead en route to a 15-7 come-from-behind victory.
UCR's Holt was named to the USD Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 2.12 kills per set and 1.75 digs per set while hitting .227 over the three matches.
UC Riverside now heads to the Utah Invitational for three matches on Friday-Saturday, September 9-10 in Salt Lake City, UT.
