Riverside, CA—TréShonti Nottingham's 23 points led four Highlanders in double figures, and UCR scored the final six points of the game to pick up a 69-65 win over visiting Cal State Fullerton. It is the first conference victory of the season for UC Riverside (3-16, 1-6), who ended a nine-game losing streak in the process.
The Highlanders led by seven at the break and scored the first basket after intermission, but Cal State Fullerton put together an 8-0 run over the next 4:01 to cut the UCR advantage to 44-43.
UC Riverside's lead fluctuated between one and five points until the Titans tied the game at 55 with 8:52 remaining, and Lauren Chow hit a three-pointer 31 seconds later giving CSF its first lead of the game, 58-55.
Fullerton still led by three, 60-57, with under five minutes to go, but the Highlanders scored the next four consecutive to retake the lead, 61-60, at the 3:20 mark.
The teams traded buckets over the next couple of possessions, and Megan Richardson's three-pointer gave the Titans a 65-63 lead with 1:44 on the clock. It was the 26th point of the game for Richardson, who scored 19 in the second half.
But Nottingham took over down the stretch scoring five of the Highlanders final six points. The UC Riverside defense tightened up as well, forcing two turnovers and two missed Fullerton shots over the final 1:44.
UCR led wire-to-wire in the first period, opening a 6-0 lead in the first 1:34 of play, and going up by double-digits nine minutes in. The Highlanders were hitting above 70 percent from the floor as their lead peaked at 15 on three occasions, the last at 33-18 at the 7:45 mark.
Cal State Fullerton made a run at that point, however, outscoring the Highlanders 11-1 over the next 2:10 to cut the lead to five, 34-29, capped off by a Chow three-pointer with 5:35 left in the half.
UC Riverside's lead went back to double-figures as they scored six of the next seven points, but the Titans made another push, scoring five straight to again close to five, 40-35, with 17 seconds on the clock.
Cal State Fullerton almost made it a one possession game moments later as Mya Olivier stole the ball from Tre'Shonti Nottingham with seven seconds to go. As Megan Richardson was streaking down the court for a fast break layup, UCR's Dynese Adams came from behind and poked the ball away, and Brittany Palmer was fouled by Richardson with one second to go. Palmer hit both from the charity stripe to send the Highlanders into the locker room with a 42-35 advantage.
The 42 points scored in the half is a season-high for the Highlanders, and the most since they went for 46 against Long beach State on March 8, 2011.
Adams and Nottingham combined for 25 of UCR's 42 points in the period, as the team hit over 55 percent of its shots (15-of-27).
The Highlanders have one contest next week, a Thursday, January 26 meeting at UC Irvine. Tip is slated for 7:00 pm in Irvine, CA.
