BYU 8, UC Riverside 4 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team staged an remarkable comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon against BYU, but it was all for naught as the Cougars scored four in the top of the 10th to take an 8-4 victory.
The Highlanders had difficulty solving BYU starter Adam Miller (1-0) who retired the first seven batters he faced and didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth. By then his teammates had staked him to a 2-0 lead off of UCR starter Trevor Frank. The Highlanders scraped together a run in their half of the fifth, but gave two back in the top of the eighth.
The Cougars brought in relief pitcher Marc Oslund to pitch the bottom of the ninth, and he gave up a quick single to pinch hitter Jake Gallaway. Devon Bolasky followed with a single up the middle to put runners at first and second, and after Eddie Young grounded out to first moving both runners up 90 feet, Clayton Prestridge singled to center to cut the Cougars lead to two.
David Andriese followed with a single to short which scored Bolasky, and Vince Gonzalez doubled to left field driving home Prestridge. Andriese tried to score on the play, but the relay beat him to the plate, and the teams headed into extra innings.
Joie Dunyon took to the hill for his second inning of work in the top of the tenth, but after getting Chase Frampton to pop up to start the inning, Dunyon allowed a double to center off of the bat of Dillon Robinson.
Antonio Gonzales got the call from the pen, but after he recorded the second out of the inning with a punch out, Wes Guenther singled up the middle scoring Robinson. Zach Varela then came on in relief, and Adam Law greeted him with a single to center that moved Guenther to second. Austin Hall singled through the left side scoring Guenther, and Tanner Chauncey doubled to right center plating two more, making the score 8-4 BYU.
The Highlanders put the leadoff hitter on in the bottom of the tenth as Phil Holinsworth singled to center, but after AJ Beckley struck out, Gallaway hit into a double play to end the game.
BYU got to Frank in the first as Stephen Wells drew a lead off walk, moved to second on a sac bunt, and scored on a single to right by Jaycob Brugman. The Cougars made it 2-0 when Wells reached on an error with one out in the top of the third, moved to third on a Chauncey single and scored on a Brugman sac fly to center.
The Highlanders nearly picked up their first runs of the game in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit as Miller walked UCR's eight and nine hitters, Cody Hough and Nick Vilter, with one out. Another four-pitch walk to lead-off hitter Devon Bolasky loaded the bases for second baseman Eddie Young.
Young worked a full count, but he couldn't do anything with a 3-2 Miller curveball taking it for a called third strike. Clayton Prestridge then lifted a fly ball to right ending the threat.
Miller continued to struggle with his command in the bottom of the fifth allowing a pair of one-out walks and a single, but he settled down recording the final two outs of the inning unscathed.
Desmond Poulson relieved Miller in the bottom of the sixth, and the Highlanders immediately doubled their hit total as the first batter he faced, Vince Gonzalez, laced a double to left center. Boudreau was hit by a pitch, and then Phil Holinsworth dropped a bunt down the third baseline that the Cougars couldn't reach to load the bases.
Hough's fielder's choice grounder to short put the Highlanders on the board, but Poulson picked up the next two outs on fly balls to right to BYU in the lead, 2-1.
The Cougars scored their two runs in the eighth thanks to some defensive miscues by the Highlanders, setting up UC Riverside's dramatic ninth-inning comeback.
