San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team took a 3-0 lead into the third inning, but San Diego State rallied to score seven straight en route to a 7-3 win over UCR (7-11) Tuesday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Highlanders staked Trevor Frank to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second as Eddie Young and Clayton Prestridge reached on one-out singles, and Drake Zarate and Cody Hough followed with back-to-back doubles to right center field.
The lead was short-lived, however, as in the bottom of the third, Jake Romanski laced a double down the right field line, Ryan Muno singled through the left side to put runners on the corners, and Matt Munoz singled through the left side to cut the UCR advantage to two, 3-1.
After a Greg Allen sac bunt which moved Munoz and Muno to second and third respectively, Tim Zier made it a 3-2 game with an RBI ground out to short. Following a walk to Jomel Torres, Frank uncorked a wild pitch that tied the game at three.
Taylor Hansen (1-1) took over on the mound for the Aztecs (11-15) in the top of the fourth replacing started Phillip Walby, and Hansen allowed just three base runners over the next three innings. He would go on to log 4.1 innings of work and allow just one hit.
Mitch Patito (1-2) replaced Frank in the fourth for the Highlanders working two scoreless innings, but in the bottom of the sixth, the Aztecs took the lead. Torres led off the frame with a walk, and one out later, Spencer Thornton joined him on the basepaths with an infield single.
After a walk to Seby Zavala, Romanski singled up the middle plating two and putting San Diego State up 5-3. Mark Garcia took over for Patito allowing a single to Muno and an RBI ground out to Munoz making it 6-3 Aztecs. Another ground out ended the threat, but the damage was done.
The Highlanders loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, but failed to score. The Aztecs tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Thornton double, an errant pick off throw, and a Zavala single through the right side.
Mike Hachadorian pitched the final inning and a third for San Diego State retiring all four batters he faced to earn his first save of the season.
The Highlanders open Big West Conference play this weekend with a three-game road trip to UC Santa Barbara.
