
UC Riverside Men's Basketball Adds Five To 2012 Recruiting Class

Riverside—UC Riverside Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Wooldridge announced today the signing of five new players to the team's recruiting class during the late signing period.
Joining the Highlanders in 2012-13 are Lucas Devenny (Santa Rosa, CA/Riverside City College/UCSB), Josh Fox (San Francisco, CA/Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep), Davin Guinn (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley HS), Taylor Johns (San Francisco, CA/Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep), and Chris Patton (Melbourne, Australia/Neosho County Community College).
Lucas Devenny
Devenny (6-9, 250) will arrive on campus this summer and have two years of eligibility with the Highlanders. He started his college career at Big West opponent UC Santa Barbara, playing two years for the Gauchos. As a freshman, Devenny played in 26 of 30 games and 24 of 32 as a sophomore on an 18-14 team that went to the NCAA Tournament.
“Lucas brings much needed size, experience, and physicality to our front line," said Wooldridge. "He has a strong work ethic which fits UCR basketball. It is exciting to have him be a part of the direction our program is headed. In addition, Lucas has a skill set that will enhance our team on both ends of the floor. We have followed Lucas since his high school days and feel he will be a very valuable piece.”
Devenny spent the 2011-12 season as a redshirt at Riverside Community College. Devenny attended Piner High School in Santa Rosa, CA where he averaged 21 ppg, 16 rpg, and nearly four blocks per game and was North Bay League co-MVP his junior and senior year. He was also named county co-player of the year after his junior and senior seasons. He was a member of the Oakland Soldiers AAU program.
Josh Fox
Fox (6-6, 210) will arrive on campus this summer and have four years of eligibility with the Highlanders. He is coming off of a senior year, in which he was recognized as the San Francisco City Player of the Year, San Francisco Chronicle Boy’s Regional Player of the Year, and First-Team All-Bay Area.
Fox's Sacred Heart Cathedral squad went 28-6 in capturing the Central Coast Section and NorCal Division III titles. He was the team's leading scorer at 19 ppg, 10 rpg, and 4 apg. He poured in 21 points and 13 rebounds in the Northern California Division III Final game, and 19 points and 7 rebounds in the California State Championship game. Fox was also a member of the San Francisco Rebels AAU Program.
“Josh is a flat-out winner," declared Wooldridge. "He has a high skill level and can play multiple positions. Josh also has the unique ability to make players around him better, and comes to us from one of the best high school programs in the state. It will be fun to watch Josh grow in our system and program.”
Davin Guinn
Guinn (6-5, 205) will arrive on campus this summer and have four years of eligibility with the Highlanders, three of which he will complete following a two year mission trip.
Guinn is coming off of a senior year in which he became Vista Murrieta’s all-time leading scorer. Averaging 23 ppg and 9.3 rpg, Guinn led his team to a 16-12 record on the year, earning First-Team All-Southwestern League and All-CIF Southern Section First Team Division 1A honors. Guinn carried a 4.2 gpa at Vista Murrieta, and was a member of the Icemen AAU Program.
“Davin is the consummate competitor," said Wooldridge. "He comes from a great teaching foundation at Vista Murrieta High School, and possesses a variety of tools that fit our system of play. Davin is a proven winner. We have high expectations for Davin and his career at UCR.”
Taylor Johns
Johns (6-6, 215) will arrive on campus this summer and have four years of eligibility with the Highlanders. He is coming off of a senior year in which he was teammate’s with Josh Fox, and was named Second-Team All-Bay Area.
The duo led Sacred Heart Cathedral to the State Championship game, with a final record of 28-6. The teams second leading scorer at 18 ppg, 12 rpg, and 3 bpg, Johns poured in 15 points,10 rebounds, and 3 blocks vs Bishop O’Dowd in the NorCal Division III title game, and 13 points, 19 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the California State Division III Championship game. Johns was also a member of the San Francisco Rebels AAU Program.
“Taylor is an exciting player to add to our program," allowed Wooldridge. "He is a truly gifted athlete and possesses great instincts for the game of basketball. Taylor has the ability to change games on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. We anticipate that Taylor will have an immediate impact on our team.”
Chris Patton
Patton (6-9, 255) will arrive on campus this summer and have two years of eligibility with the Highlanders. He comes to Riverside after a stellar sophomore year of junior college in which he was named First-Team, All-Jayhawk Conference East, and Second-Team, All-Region VI. Patton, rated #106 in the 2012 JucoJunction Top 150 in the nation averaging 15 ppg and 10 rpg on a 17-14 team. He also shot 55% from the field (187-343) on the year.
“Chris will give us an immediate impact in the post position," said Wooldridge. "He is a proven scorer in the pivot area, and is one of the best passers for a post-man I have personally recruited. Chris comes from a winning program and has tremendous potential to impact the UCR basketball program.”
Devenny, Fox, Guinn, Johns and Patton join early signees Tajai Johnson, Dayton Boddie, and Tre'von Owens as the Highlanders current crop of 2012 recruits.
“I am truly excited about the quality of our entire recruiting class," added Wooldridge. "We were able to meet the needs we had after losing a large class of seniors to graduation. This new group of student-athletes will be exciting to watch move UCR basketball to a successful future.”
