Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking to avoid a sweep Sunday afternoon at the hands of Cal Poly, but the Mustangs continued their late season push for an NCAA Tournament berth with a 6-0 victory.
Dylan Stuart (7-7) got the start for the Highlanders (22-32, 9-15), and he retired the side in order in the top of the first. In the second, however, David Armendariz got a hold of the first pitch he saw and deposited it over the right field fence.
In the top of the second, the Mustangs (36-20, 16-8) loaded the bases for clean up hitter Jimmy Allen, and he lifted a sac fly to center field to make it 2-0 Cal Poly. Armandariz followed with a single to left for the Mustangs' third run of the game.
Stuart worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth, but in the fifth Armendariz picked up his third RBI of the game with a single to left.
Cal Poly scored another run of the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to left off the bat of Mike Miller, and in the top of the seventh, it was Armanderiz again coming through with a single up the middle.
Mustangs starter Bryan Granger (1-1) went six innings scattering five hits and striking out three to pick up his first win of the season. Matt Imhof pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the year.
Coupled with Cal State Fullerton's win over Long Beach State, Cal Poly's victory moved them into second place in conference, and into the driver's seat should the NCAA selection committee award the Big West an at-large bid.
