Riverside—Whoever said you can't go home again, never coached soccer at UC Riverside. Nat Gonzalez, who was the head coach of the Highlanders men's soccer team from 2001-03, picked up his first win as head coach of the UCR women's soccer team Friday evening, with a 2-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield in the season opener for both clubs.
"It was awesome," said Gonzalez of the win. "I came in to the game very unsure of what to expect since we weren't able to get a scout on Bakersfield prior to the match. We just had to hope that the preseason that we had together was going to be enough so that, one, we could stay organized, and, two, keep goals out, which I thought we did well until the very end."
Neither team found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of play, but the Roadrunners had a few opportunities early in the second half. Thankfully Jessica White, who missed all but two matches a year ago with an injury, was in goal for the Highlanders and able to keep the score tied at zero.
UC Riverside finally got on the scoreboard thanks to a defensive miscue by Roadrunners goalkeeper Tori Ornela. Alexa Bustamante got a foot on the miss-kick redirecting it to Crystal Lopez who slotted it past Ornela for the first goal of her collegiate career and a 1-0 Highlanders lead with 17:38 gone in the second.
Celina Valencia gave UCR a two-goal cushion just over six minutes later. Amber Marani gave her the ball streaking down the outside, and after drawing the defenders with her, Valencia cut back to the middle and went far post for her first score of the season.
CSUB didn't go quietly, however, as Erica Shelton found Joanna Ortiz with a long ball to the top of the box with 83:14 gone in the match. Ortiz chipped it over White, who had to come away from the goal, and the UCR lead was cut in half.
The Runners almost scored the equalizer just over a minute later, but an offside call pulled the tying score off of the board.
The Highlanders hit the road this weekend traveling to Southern Utah Sunday for a 3 pm PT meeting with the Thunderbirds. Follow all the action via Live Stats on gohighlanders.com.
