Box Score - Gonzaga 3, UC Riverside 0
Spokane, WA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team continued play at the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday morning with a 3-0 loss to the host Zags at the Martin Centre. The sets were close, however, as the Bulldogs (2-3) bested the Highlanders 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21.
Amanda Vialpando led UCR (3-2) with 10 kills and nine digs while Jasmin White recorded nine kills and Shelby LeDuff added eight.
Gonzaga led 16-8 in the first set, but the Highlanders scored five straight points to cut the advantage to just three, 16-13. Vialpando served throughout the rally and started the run with a kill and a service ace.
The teams then traded points until Gonzaga was at set-point, 24-19. UCR continued to push, using an Annishia McKoy kill, another Vialpando service ace, and a Zags error to close to 24-22. The rally was not enough, however, as Gonzaga closed out the set with a Savannah Blinn kill for the 25-22 win.
The Bulldogs quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in set two, and pushed their advantage to 7-1. The Highlanders did not let that deter them, rallying back to eventually tie the set at 13, and go up 14-13, capping off a 13-6 run.
Both teams traded points until 17-17 when Gonzaga scored six unanswered to open the set at 23-17. The run proved too much for UCR as the Zags closed out the set with a 25-19 victory.
A Megan Reza service ace put the Highlanders on top early in the third set, 4-3. The Bulldogs scored seven of the next nine points to open a 10-6 lead, and it would be a lead they never relinquished as the HIghlanders fell just short in the 25-21 loss.
UC Riverside concludes the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 4 pm PT match against South Dakota State.
