Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team opened the Big West Conference portion of its schedule Friday evening with a 3-0 loss to nationally ranked #7 Hawai'i at the SRC Arena. The Highlanders (5-9, 0-1) hung tough against the Wahine (9-2, 2-0), but could not pull off the upset in a 25-17, 25-16, and 25-19 loss.
Amanda Vialpando led UCR with 11 kills while Annishia McKoy added seven and hit .583 on the night. Megan Patterson led all players with 13 digs, while UH's Jane Croson had 13 kills to lead the teams.
Hawai'i used three kills and two UCR errors to quickly open a 5-0 lead in the first set. The Highlanders got three of those points back on an Ashley Cox kill and two UH miscues to close to 5-3, before eventually rallying for an 8-7 lead after three straight Wahine errors.
The tides turned as it was Hawai'i making the next run, posting five consecutive points to go back up by a score of 12-8. UC Riverside continued to press, however, closing to within one, 16-15, following kills from McKoy and Vialpando.
The set turned again, this time in favor of the Wahine as they scored three straight points, and closed out the frame on a 9-2 run to win 25-17.
The teams traded points to open the second set before UH turned a 3-3 tie into a 7-3 advantage. UC Riverside never got closer than that margin the rest of the way as Hawai'i proved why they're nationally ranked cruising to a 25-16 victory.
UCR came out strong in the third set opening a 6-3 lead following kills from Cox and Shelby LeDuff, and two Wahine errors. The Highlanders then grew their advantage to 10-6, but Hawai'i battled back with a massive 12-0 run to take a 19-10 lead.
A Jasmin White kill put a cork in the rally, and UCR got as close as five points late, but the deficit was too great as Hawai'i closed out the match with a 25-19 win.
The Highlanders now continue league play on Saturday, September 22 with a 7 pm PT match against Cal State Northridge at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
