Riverside—Chris Patton scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the second half while Chris Harriel scored 15 of his 17 in the first period as the Highlanders outlasted UC Irvine, 68-58 (Box Score).
Harriel got UC Riverside (5-13, 2-4) off to a quick start hitting his first three three pointers as the Highlanders built a 9-2 lead with 4:19 gone in the first. The Anteaters (10-10, 4-3) scored the next seven straight, and 12 of the next 14 points to take their only lead of the evening at 14-11 midway through the period.
Harriel ended that run with a dunk and a free throw which sparked a 13-0 run as UC Irvine failed to score for more than seven minutes of action. The 6-4 junior capped the run with another thunderous dunk, and the Highlanders led by 10, 24-14 with 2:35 on the clock.
Harriel punctuated the half by draining his fourth three pointer of the half with 11 seconds to go to put UCR up 11 at the half, 29-18. His 15 points nearly matched the offensive output of the entire Anteaters squad as Irvine went just six of 30 from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play including two for 14 from long distance.
Whatever Coach Turner told his team at the break worked early in the second as the 'Eaters opened the period on a 13-4 run to close within two at 33-31 with 15 minutes to go.
Taylor Johns scored five straight points to put an end to the UC Irvine surge, and and old fashioned three-point play by Patton put the Highlanders back up by double figures, 45-35, with 10:45 to go. Patton would go on to score nine of UCR's next 16 points to help the Highlanders to their largest lead of the evening at 13 points, 56-43.
UC Irvine had one more run left in them cutting the UC Riverside advantage to five on two occasions. The last was with 3:55 to go, but the Highlanders began a parade to the free throw line shortly thereafter draining 17 of 26 fro the charity stripe after the break.
UC Irvine's Daman Starring led all scorers scoring 20 of his 22 points in the second half. Josh Fox joined Patton and Harriel in double figure scoring for the Highlanders picking up his second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
