Box Score - UC Irvine 3, UC Riverside 1
Irvine, CA - Both Cristina Maietta and Fabiana Rosas recorded 12 kills apiece for the UC Riverside Volleyball Team on Friday evening, but UC Irvine prevailed in a 3-1 Big West Conference match. The Anteaters took set one, 26-24, but the Highlanders rallied in the second winning 25-21. UCI earned the third-set win, 25-15, and closed out the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.
Annishia McKoy almost gave the Highlanders three players in double-figure kills as she recorded nine, and Tyler Dorsey added seven. Marisa Bubica led three UC Irvine players in double-digit kills with a match-high 19.
In the first set, UC Riverside had the early advantage using a 9-2 run to take a 15-7 lead. UC Irvine scored four unanswered points, but the Highlanders maintained their composure and led 19-13 late in the frame.
The Anteaters then scored four of the next five points, and went on to tie the set at 23-23 following back-to-back UCR errors. A service ace put UCI up at set-point, but a Dorsey kill evened the score at 24. UC Irvine closed out the set with consecutive kills, however, concluding its come-from-behind victory.
The Highlanders found themselves down by four points midway through the second set, but used a 7-2 rally to take a 16-15 advantage. Rosas recorded three kills during that span, while McKoy had one and Maietta added a service ace.
That prompted an Anteaters timeout, but UCR kept pushing and opened up a five-point lead, 22-17, and closed out the set strong with a 25-21 victory.
That tied the match at 1-1, but UC Irvine took the third set after turning a 6-6 tie into a 17-9 advantage. UC Riverside could not recover enough points, and the Anteaters went up in the match 2-1.
The fourth set saw seven tie scores early, but UCR fell behind midway through, 17-12. Try as the Highlanders might, UCI kept its margin above four points the rest of the way, securing the 25-19 victory.
UC Riverside remains on the road to face Long Beach State on Saturday at 7 pm PT in Long Beach, CA.
