Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team returned home to the SRC Arena on Friday evening looking to pick up its first victory in Big West play, but UC Santa Barbara came away with the 25-17, 25-15, and 25-16 win.
Three players recorded double-figure kills for UCSB (11-8, 6-1), led by Katey Thompson's 14. Cristina Maietta had nine kills to lead the Highlanders (1-18, 0-7).
After trading points early in set one, the Gauchos turned a 3-2 lead into an 8-2 advantage by capitalizing on four Highlanders errors. UCR would go on to close the gap to four on three occasions, the last at 17-13 following a UCSB attack error.
UC Santa Barbara then scored three straight pushing the lead back to seven, and led at set-point by nine, 24-15. Maietta recorded back-to-back kills for the Highlanders in a late push, but a subsequent attack error gave the Gauchos the 25-17 victory.
UCSB led wire-to-wire in the second set, out hitting the Highlanders, .469 to .167. The Gauchos went on for the 25-15 win, but in the third set, the Highlanders came out of the gate strong with a 4-1 lead. Lindsay Hornsby, Tyler Dorsey and Bri Holmes all had kills, while Hillary Horton added a service ace during the opening moments of the set.
That advantage was short-lived, however, as UC Santa Barbara tied the set at five, and went up 8-5 after a 5-0 run. UC Riverside got within two, 9-7, but gave up six of the next eight points as the lead grew to 15-9. The Highlanders could not recover after that, as the Gauchos went on for the 25-16 victory.
The Highlanders now host Cal Poly on Saturday for a 7 pm PT match at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
