Iowa Tops Women's Basketball 70-56 In Season Opener At Hawkeye Challenge

Iowa City, Iowa - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team opened the 2013-14 season Friday evening with a 70-56 loss at Iowa in game one of the Hawkeye Challenge. Brittany Crain led the Highlanders (0-1) with 22 points and 12 rebounds while freshman Simone DeCoud added 15 points in her collegiate debut. (Box Score).
Iowa (1-0) and UCR battled through four tie scores during the first 10 minutes of play as neither team led by more four points until late in the first half.
After Crain hit a three-pointer at the 2:35 mark to bring the Highlanders within one, 27-26, the Hawkeyes ended the half on an 8-0 run to enter the break up 35-26.
The Hawkeyes continued their offensive outburst to open up the second period, taking a 14-point advantage, 41-27, just 2:20 into the half.
The lead hovered around a dozen points for the rest of the half as the Highlanders could not cut the lead to single-digits.
For the game, Iowa hit 36.9 percent of its shots while UC Riverside hit 32.8 percent. The Highlanders out-rebounded the Hawkeyes, 45-42.
UC Riverside now plays Dayton at 12 pm PT on Saturday in game two of the Hawkeye Challange.
