San Diego, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team narrowly lost a one-point contest to San Diego State Saturday afternoon, 58-57, in the first game of the San Diego Surf & Slam Tournament at Viejas Arena. The Highlanders will now face the loser of the tournament's second game, North Carolina State vs. Kansas State, on Monday, December 30 at 3:30 pm in San Diego (box score).
It was a game of runs Saturday as there were three tie scores and six lead changes, the last occuring with less than two minutes to go. With the Aztecs up 52-48, a pair of free throws by Natasha Hadley and a Jamila Williams jumper tied the score at 52 with 1:40 left.
SDSU then hit a three-pointer on their next trip down the court, and after a defensive stop, hit a layup with 26 seconds remaining to go up by five, 57-52. Simone DeCoud drained a long ball with 13 seconds left to cut the lead to 57-55. The Highlanders were forced to foul, and San Diego State hit one of two making it 58-55.
UCR came down with the rebound looking to tie with a three-pointer. DeCoud's attempt was off the mark, but Akilah Martin grabbed the rebound and layed it in for two points. On the ensuing inbound, UC Riverside could not foul to stop the clock, as the Aztecs crawled away with the victory.
San Diego State scored the first bucket of the game nearly a minute into play, but the Highlanders used an 11-2 run over the next six minutes to lead 11-4. Four different players contributed in that span, including back-to-back three-pointers from Martin.
UCR continued its offensive prowess by scoring 10 of the next 14 points, taking a 21-8 lead at the 7:41 mark. Hadley converted three layups while Annelise Ito scored a pair of buckets during the rally. SDSU scored the next five, however, but UC Riverside responded by going up by its largest margin of the half, 31-17, with 4:19 remaining.
San Diego State again made a push, closing to eight while holding the Highlanders scoreless over the next two minutes, as UCR entered the break up by that margin, 33-25.
The Highlanders increased their advantage to 11 after two minutes into the second half, but the Aztecs offense ramped up, scoring 13 straight to go up 41-39 at the 11:48 mark. Meanwhile, UCR missed six shots and committed five turnovers as the lead changed hands.
DeCoud's three-pointer 15 seconds later sparked a 7-0 Highlanders run as the lead was back to five for the blue and gold, 46-41. San Diego State was quick to counter, scoring six unanswered points over a 1:10 span to retake the lead, 47-46, with just over seven minutes to go, setting up the final minutes of play in the Aztecs victory.
Four UC Riverside players scored in double-figures led by 14 from DeCoud. Hadley and Martin both added 13 while Ito chipped in with 11. The Highlanders were without leading scoring Brittany Crain, who missed the game due to injury.
Ariell Bostick led the Aztecs in scoring with 12 points, while three others added double-digit scoring.
UCR outshot SDSU, 39.0 percent to 36.7 percent, but were outrebounded 42 to 37, while also committing 14 turnovers to the Aztecs 11.
