Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team whittled a 15-point UC Irvine lead down to one with under three minutes to play, Wednesday evening at the Bren Center, but the Anteaters were able to hold on for the 52-48 win.
It was a 12-point Anteaters (13-13, 7-6) advantage, 45-33, with 6:23 to go in the game, when the Highlanders finally jump started their offense. Austin Quick drained back-to-back three pointers to make it a six-point game, and after another defensive stop, Chris Patton's two free throws cut the lead to four, 45-41.
Followong a UC Irvine turnover, Chris Harriel drained an NBA three from in front of the Highlanders bench to pull within one, 45-44.
The Anteaters put a stop to Riverside's 11-0 run with a pair of free throws, but Harriel got them both back on the next UCR (5-19, 2-10) possession with two free throws of his own. An Adam Folker jump hook in the lane extended the 'Eaters lead back to three, 49-46, and Harriel misfired on a long two with just over a minute to go.
After another defensive stop, Coach Wooldridge called time out with 40.0 seconds on the clock. Patton took a three from the left elbow with 28 seconds to go that was hard off the back iron, but after Starring made one of two free throws, Taylor Johns scored on a reverse layup with 13.8 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two, 50-48.
The Highlanders sent Travis Souza to the free throw line on the next UCI possession, and he made both to push the advantage back out to four, 52-48, and UC Riverside couldn't connect on its final shot of the evening as the 'Eaters escaped with the four-point victory..
Michael Wilder scored 11 of his game-high 17 poits in the second half, while Harriel led UC Riverside with an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double—the first of his Highlanders career.
The Anteaters jumped out to an early 12-2 lead as the Highlanders missed 10 of their first 11 shots form the floor. Robert Smith's three pointer from the left arc ended the run with 13:29 remaining, as UC Riverside scored eight of the next 10 points to close with four, 14-10.
That caused the 'Eaters to call a 30-second time out which stopped the Highlanders' momentum. UCR's offensive struggles returned, and Irvine went on a mini 7-2 run to push their lead back out to nine, 21-12.
It was just a 26-14 Anteaters advantage heading into the locker room as both team's struggled to get into any offensive flow. The Highlanders connected on just 26.1 percent (6 of 26) of their shots from the field, while UC Irvine managed to hit 32.1 percent (9 of 28). Wilder, Alex Young and Daman Starring each had six points to lead the Anteaters at the break, and Taylor Johns' four points were tops for UC Riverside.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend as they travel to Long Beach State Saturday for a 4:05 pm tip against the 49ers.
