Palm Springs, CA—Phil Holinsworth drove in three runs Saturday evening as the UC Riverside Baseball Team bounced back from a 5-3 deficit to pick up an 8-7 win over Utah Valley at the Palm Springs Baseball Tournament (Box Score).
The Wolverines (1-2) scored two runs in the top of the fifth ending Jacob Smigelski's night on the hill, and giving Utah Valley a two run cushion, 5-3.
Wolverines starter Andrew Freter retired the Highlanders (1-1) in order in the fifth and sixth, but he appeared to tire in the bottom of the seventh. Drake Zarate and Kyle Boudreau drew walks to start the inning, sending Freter to the showers. Matt Rigby came on in relief, and struck out Francisco Tellez, but the next batter, Holinsworth, ripped a triple to right center scoring Zarate and Boudreau and tying the game at five.
Ryan Evans answered the next call to the bullpen, and he recorded the second out of the inning by striking out pinch hitter Nick Vilter. Clayton Prestidge put the Highlanders on top, however, with a single up the middle that scored Holinsworth.
Utah Valley tied the score in the top of the eighth off of Kevin Sprague thanks to a single, a balk, a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by third baseman Joe Chavez.
It didn't take long for UC Riverside to regain the lead, however, as the Highlanders loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of an Eddie Young walk, a David Andriese single, and a walk to Chavez.
Zarate lined out to first and Chavez was doubled up on the play, putting the Highlanders rally in jeopardy, but Boudreau drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases again. Wolverines' pitcher Tony Ulibarri (0-1), who came on in relief to start the inning, then issued another four-pitch walk, this one to Tellez, as UCR regained the lead, 7-6.
Danny Bedes came out of the bullpen to try and end the threat, but he walked Holinsworth to give the Highlanders a two-run cushion.
As it turned out, UC Riverside would need that extra run. Trevor Frank (1-0), who came on with two outs in the top of the eighth, gave up a single to Sean Moysh, and then plunked Willie Pratt to put runners at first and second.
Mark Krueger grounded out to first advancing both runners a base, and Kai Hatch's ground out to first did the same, scoring pinch runner Beau Kallas. That brought catcher Colby Croft to the plate with the tying run just 90 feet away, but Frank struck him out to end the game.
The Highlanders didn't record their first hit of the game until the third inning, but that didn't prevent them from taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Prestridge drew a walk to open the inning, and advanced to third on Young's ground out to second. Andriese brought Prestridge home with a sac fly to left, and UC Riverside had the early lead.
Smigelski was making the first start of his Highlanders career, and he allowed just one hit over the first two innings of play, striking out a pair.
The Wolverines got to him in the third, though, as Jordy Hart started off the inning getting hit by a pitch. A double to left center by Moysh advanced Hart to third, and after Smigelski struck out Pratt, Krueger laced a single to left center that tied the game at one apiece. A wild pitched moved Kruger to second, and a ground out to short by Hatch gave Utah Valley the lead.
The Highlanders tied the game up in the bottom of the third, as Phil Holinsworth was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and Alex Rubanowitz's single to center put runners on the corners.
That brought Prestridge to the plate, and with a 2-2 count, Rubanowitz broke for second. Prestridge struck out swinging, and Rubanowitz was out on the play, but Holinsworth was able to scamper home with UC Riverside's second run of the day.
Two Wolverines singles, a fielder's choice and a throwing error in the top of the fourth put Utah Valley back in the lead, 3-2. Boudreau tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a single to right that scored Zarate.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Sunday game against nationally ranked Oregon State. First pitch is slated for 1 pm PT.
