Palm Springs, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking to knock off the sixth ranked team in the nation Sunday afternoon in the form of Oregon State, but it was the Beavers who came away with a 14-3 victory at the Palm Springs Baseball Tournament (Box Score).
Ben Doucette (0-1) got the first start of his career for the Highlanders after 30 relief appearances over the past three years. Unfortunately, it was a short one.
The first four batters reached base courtesy of a single and three walks. Doucette appeared to settle down getting the first out of the inning on a sac fly, and the second on a backwards K, but the next two batters singled, and Joey Matthews' doubled to put the Beavers up 6-0. Antonio Gonzales came on in relief and recorded the final out of the inning on a ground out to third.
Oregon State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second, but Gonzales retired the side in order in the top half of the third.
Meanwhile Beavers starter Andrew Moore (1-0) allowed just one hit over the first three innings, but he ran into trouble in the top of the fourth. Joe Chavez reached on a hit by pitch to start the inning and promptly stole second. A Drake Zarate groundout advanced Chavez to third, and after Phil Holinsworth was hit by a pitch that put runners on the corners, Kyle Boudreau's fielder's choice gave UCR its first run of the game.
Alex Rubanowitz followed with a single up the middle to once again put runners on the corners. Devyn Bolasky reached on an error that scored Boudreau, and Clayton Prestige lifted a single to center to cut the Oregon State advantage to four, 7-3.
The Highlanders momentum was short-lived, however, as the Beavers scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Moore settled down allowing just one hit over the next three innings.
The tournament has a 10-run rule, and with UC Riverside down 14-3 in the middle of the seventh, the game was over.
The Highlanders and Beavers square off one more time to conclude the tournament on Monday with first pitch slated for 8:30 am.
