Offense Struggles As Men's Basketball Falls To Cal State Northidge, 69-53
2/2/2013 9:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—UC Riverside's offense, which shot 50 percent from the field in six of the past eight games, struggled Saturday evening in a 69=53 loss to Cal State Northridge (Box Score).
Chris Harriel scored the Highlanders first eight points as they built a 10-5 lead with 15:28 to go in the first. The next UCR basket wouldn't come for nearly five minutes as the Matadors scored 11 straight to take a lead they would never relinquish.
It was still a six point CSUN lead with 6:54 on the clock when the Matadors went on another run, this one of the 6-0 variety which pushed their lead to 12.
The Highlanders scored the final five points of the first period capped off by a Steven Jones three-pointer, to cut the Northridge lead to seven at the break, 28-21.
Cal State Northridge scored the first four points of the second half to push their lead back into double figures, but the Highlanders battled back with five straight of their own thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play by Chris Patton and a jumper by Harriel.
With 16:15 on the clock, it was still a six points Matadors lead, but Northridge scored 18 of the next 24 points to put the game out of reach.
CSUN's Stephen Maxwell finished with a game-high 17 points, 15 of which came in the final 20 minutes of play. Harriel led the Highlanders with 16, and Patton added 11.
The Highlanders remain at home next week as they host Cal State Fullerton Saturday at 8 pm. The game is being televised on Prime Ticket.
