Irvine, CA—The Big West announced today that UC Riverside's Joe Chavez is the Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games from March 4-10. College Sports Madness also named Chavez its Big West Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
The sophomore banged out 13 hits on the week as the Highlanders went 3-2 beating Loyola Marymount in a midweek game and splitting a four-game series at New Mexico.
Chavez had at least two hits in each game during the week, scoring eight runs and driving in nine while going a perfect four for four in the stolen base department.
In game one of a Saturday double header against the Lobos, the Ontario, CA native picked up the first four-hit game of his career. He also drove in three runs and scored three. In game two of the double header, Chavez once again drove in three runs becoming the first member of the Highlanders to do that in back-to-back games since David Andriese on April 29 and 30, 2011.
Chavez is in the top five in on base percentage among all Big West players, and in the top 10 in batting average and slugging percentage. He leads the Highlanders in all three categories and is eight for nine in stolen base attempts on the year.
