Portand, OR—Ben Doucette and Trevor Frank combined on a six-hitter, and Devyn Bolasky and Clayton Prestridge each scored a pair of runs, Sunday, as the UC Riverside Baseball Team picked up a 5-1 win over Portland (Box Score).
Doucette got the start for the Highlanders and scattered five hits through five innings all while keeping the Pilots off the board. Portland starter Billy Sahlinger was every bit as good, if not better, allowing just one base hit and four walks through his five-and-two-thirds innings of work.
J.R. Bunda came on in relief of Sahlinger with two outs in the top of the sixth and runners on second and third. He retired Nick Vilter for the third out on a grounder, and after giving up a Francisco Tellez infield single to start the top of the seventh, recorded two more ground ball outs that moved Tellez to third.
Bolasky ended the scoring drought with a single up the middle that scored Tellez, and after Prestridge singled to center, and David Andriese reached on a fielding error, Phil Holinsworth singled to left scoring Prestridge and Bolasky putting the Highlanders up 3-0.
Frank took over for Doucette to start the sixth and retired the first six batters he faced. Cody Lenahan doubled to right to open the bottom of the eighth, but the Pilots were unable to bring him home.
The Highlanders tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth as Bolasky, Presridge and Andriese reached on back-to-back-to-back singles, and two batters later, Vilter lifted a sacrifice fly to center to put UC Riverside up, 5-0.
Ben Grubb reached on an error to open the bottom of the ninth, and came around to score thanks to a wild pitch a ground out and a sac fly, but Frank got Brian Frattali swinging to end the game. Frank earned the win with his four innings of one-hit relief, striking out six while walking just one batter.
The Highlanders are off for finals over the next 10 days returning to the field on Thursday March 28 for the start of Big West Conference play and a three-game, home series against UC Irvine.
