Riverside—It took another come-from-behind effort, but the UC Riverside Baseball Team remains perfect at home this season thanks to a 7-5, come-from-behind victory over the 21st-ranked UC Irvine Anteaters Friday night (Box Score/Video Highlights).
UC Riverside (12-9, 2-0) jumped in front early touching Anteaters starter Matt Whitehouse for three runs in the bottom of the second. Kevin Davidson got the rally started lacing a one-out double to center. Nick Vilter walked, and one batter later, Alex Rubanowitz singled through the right side for the first run of the game. A wild pitch sent Rubanowitz to second, and a Joe Chavez double made it 3-0 UC Riverside.
The lead didn't last long, however as the 'Eaters (16-7, 0-2) hung a three-spot of their own on the board in the top of the third. UC Riverside starter Jacob Smigelski allowed just two hits through his first two innings of work, but in the third, Scott Gotschling singled to open the inning, Jon Herkins was hit by a pitch, and Dominique Taylor drew a walk to load the bases.
Connor Spencer Singled through the right side to make it a 3-1 ballgame, and Ronnie Shaeffer followed with a single through the left side reducing the UCR lead to one. One batter later, Jerry McClanahan's fielder's choice ground out tied the game at three.
It remained a 2-2 game until the top of the fifth when Shaeffer and Sparks opened the inning with back-to-back singles. a sac bunt moved both runners up 90 feet, and a Kris Paulino ground out gave the Anteaters a 4-3 lead. Chris Rabago then singled to right to give Irvine a two-run cushion.
UC Riverside got one back in the bottom of the fifth when Cody Hough led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a Clayton Prestridge ground out and scored on a ground out by Andriese.
The Highlanders completed their comeback in the bottom of the seventh carving their way through five pitchers in the inning. Chavez doubled to left to start the rally and scored thanks to back-to-back wild pitches. Hough then drew a walk and moved to second on a Prestridge single to right. A balk moved both runners up 90 feet, and Andriese singled through the right side scoring Hough. Ball four to Holinsworth got away from the UC Irvine catcher, and Prestridge came home with the final run of the game.
Mark Garcia (3-2) picked up the win throwing five innings of relief, and Trevor Frank pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season. UCI reliever Kyle Hooper (1-1) was saddled with the loss.
The Highlanders and Anteaters finish their three-game Big West Conference series on Saturday beginning at 2 pm PT right here at The Plex.
