Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team didn't need any late-inning heroics to extend its home winning streak Saturday evening, as the Highlanders jumped on the Pacific Tigers early on their way to an 11-6 victory (Box Score/Video Recap).
Joe Chavez put the Highlanders on the board in the bottom of the first, ripping a 1-1 pitch to left over the Pepsi Max sign for his second homer of the season.
Fancisco Tellez made it 2-0 UC Riverside one inning later, as he banged a Michael Benson (2-4) offering off of the scoreboard in right center. The last time the Highlanders hit two home runs in a game at The Plex was on May 29, 2010 against UC Davis.
Highlanders starter Ben Doucette (2-2) retired Jacob Goulder on a fly ball to right to start the top of the third, but the next batter, JJ Wagner, doubled to right center, and one out later, Dustin Torchio brought Goulder home with a single to center.
Chavez got the run back the following inning as Devyn Bolasky led off with a single back through the box, and Chavez hit a double to deep center to score Bolasky. David Andriese traded places with Chavez lacing a double down the right field line to make it 4-1 Highlanders, and Kyle Boudreau did likewise as his double to right went off the Budweiser sign to put UC Riverside up four.
Yesterday's hero, Phil Holinsworth, brought Boudreau home with a single up the middle ending Benson's night. He was replaced by Patrick Weigel, and the right-hander was able to get out of the jam with an inning-ending double play.
Doucette picked up the first out in the top of the fourth with ease, but loaded the bases thanks to a hit batter, a single and an error. Another fielding error scored Gio Brusa from third bringing Head Coach Doug Smith out of the dugout for a meeting on the mound.
Whatever Smith said had its desired effect, as Doucette struck out Wagner, and got Tyler Sullivan to lift a lazy fly ball to left to get out of the inning.
The Highlanders continued their hit parade in the bottom of the fourth as a Chavez fielder's choice scored Nick Vilter with the team's seventh run of the evening, and Andriese's single plated Chavez and Prestridge to make it 9-2 UC Riverside.
The Tigers kept the Highlanders off of the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, but in the sixth, Clayton Prestridge pushed the team's tenth run of the game across the plate with a double to left center that scored Chavez.
Jason Taasaas drove in Pacific's fourth run in the top of the seventh, and a Chavez double in the bottom of the eighth scored Bolasky with the Highlanders final run of the game.
Pacific scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the ninth before Highlanders reliever Jack Johnson was able to close the door on the Tigers.
UC Riverside and Pacific finish their three-game Big West Conference series on Sunday. First pitch at The Plex is slated for 1 pm PT.
