Irvine, CA—The Big West named UC Riverside sophomore outfielder "Super" Joe Chavez the conference player of the week today for games played from April 8-14. It is Chavez's second Big West player of the week award this season, making him the first UCR position player since Nick Salotti in 2004 to win two awards in the same year (Complete list of UCR Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week Honorees).
Chavez scored the game winning run in each of the Highlanders three victories over Pacific over the weekend as UC Riverside extended its home winning streak to 11 games in a row. Nine of those wins are of the come-from-behind variety including two over the weekend.
On Friday, the sophomore banged out four hits, the last of which came in the bottom of the ninth. The Highlanders battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the eighth only to watch as the Tigers regained the lead in the top of the ninth. After Francisco Tellez was hit by a pitch, Chavez singled through the left side, and eventually came around to score the game-winner on Phil Holinsworth's single back through the box (View Video Recap).
Chavez wasted no time in giving the Highlanders a lead they would never relinquish on Saturday as he belted his second home run of the season over the left field wall with one out in the bottom of the first. He would add three doubles on the day, and steal three bases including two pilfers of third (View Video Recap).
In Sunday's finale, the Highlanders once again had to come from behind to secure the win. Tied at three, Chavez walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh, stole second, moved to third on a sac bunt, and scored on a Clayton Prestridge sacrifice fly (View Video Recap).
Chavez increased his batting average from .284 to .330 over the weekend, and now ranks in the top 10 in the Big West in batting average, on base percentage, runs scored, doubles, triples and stolen bases.
