UC Riverside Athletics Collecting Shoes This Weekend For Soles4Souls
4/23/2013 2:04:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside— Soles4Souls, the global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty, is ramping up efforts to help individuals in need this year, and the UC Riverside Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is getting on board to help the shoeless.
Individuals can help by donating their gently worn shoes at any of the UC Riverside Baseball or Softball games this weekend.
The Highlanders host UC Santa Barbara for a three-game baseball series with games slated for Friday at 6 pm PT, Saturday at 6 pm and Sunday at 1 pm.
The UC Riverside Softball Team takes on Cal Poly in a Saturday double header at noon, and a single game Sunday, also at noon.
"Many of us take for granted what we put on our feet," said UC Riverside Baseball pitcher Donovan Gonzales, who is spearheading the Highlanders efforts, "but there are millions of people around the world for whom a pair of shoes can make all the difference."
Soles4Souls has distributed more than 19 million pairs of shoes around the world with the help of partners like the Highlanders.
With one in every four adults in the world living in extreme poverty, basic necessities like shoes are simply unavailable. In developing nations like Haiti, Honduras, and Tanzania, walking is the main form of transportation, and shoes can protect a person’s feet from cuts and infections. Also, children in other parts of the world cannot attend school without a pair of shoes.
"We are excited that groups like the UC Riverside Athletics Department are working with us to help end the perpetuation of poverty by providing used shoes and micro-jobs to individuals in other countries,” said Buddy Teaster, CEO of Soles4Souls. "Please join in this initiative to collect gently worn footwear, and possibly improve the quality of someone’s daily life. Shoes can enable someone to step out of poverty.”
