Baseball Rolls Snake Eyes In 20-6 Loss To UNLV

Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Baseball Team rolled snake eyes on Tuesday afternoon as the UNLV Rebels pounded out 18 hits in a 20-6 victory (Box Score).
Antonio Gonzales (0-2) got the start on a "staff day" for the Highlanders (18-22) and pitched a scoreless first inning, but he wasn't so fortunate in the bottom of the second. The sophomore left-hander walked three batters in the frame and uncorked a wild pitch, but the big blow came as Matt McCallister belted a grand slam to left to stake the Rebels (28-16) to a 4-0 lead.
Erik Vanmeetren opened the third with a single through the left side, and Patrick Armstrong followed with a home run to right center that put UNLV up 6-0.
Donovan Gonzales came out of the pen for the Highlanders, but he didn't fare much better walking two batters and giving up three hits as the Rebels scored three more runs in the inning to lead 9-0.
UC Riverside had just one hit through the first three innings, but came to life in the top of the fourth as Joe Chavez doubled to right, Clayton Prestridge was hit by a pitch, and David Andriese drove home the Highlanders first run of the game with a single through the right side. Two batters later, a Kyle Boudreau ground out plated UCR's second run of the game, and a fielding error on a Nick Vilter grounder made it 9-3 Rebels.
UNLV kept up the pressure in the bottom of the fourth sending nine batters to the plate and scoring six runs to go up by 12. The Rebels added three more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 20-3 lead.
Francisco Tellez connected on a two-run homer to right center in the top of the seventh, and Cody Hough's double in the ninth scored Vilter, but the Rebels offensive outburst was too much for the Highlanders to overcome.
UC Riverside remains on the road this weekend as the Highlanders travel to nationally-ranked Cal Poly for a three-game Big West Conference series.
