Riverside—UC Riverside Head Women's Soccer Coach Nat Gonzalez announced today the hiring of former UC Irvine standout Sarah Devine as the team's new assistant coach. She replaces Lauren Barnes, who was drafted by Seattle Reign FC in the NWSL Supplemental Draft in March of this year.
"We are very excited to have Sarah come aboard," said Gonzalez. "She is a young, up-and-coming coach who has a passion for the game, and specifically collegiate level athletes. She's shown an ability to push athletes to new levels both physically and mentally.
"Sarah also brings Big West First-Team All-Conference credentials to the program as a defender, and we will have her focused primarily on working with our defenders. All of that coupled with her overall experience and energy will make her a great asset to our coaching staff and our program."
Devine played in 68 matches for the Anteaters during her four-year career including 66 in her final three years. The San Diego, California native scored three goals and handed out four assists in her career, and earned All-Big West First Team accolades following her senior campaign.
"I am so excited to be a part of the UC Riverside Women’s Soccer coaching staff working alongside Nat and Keishawn," said Devine. "Although I will step into the role with extensive playing experience and many years of youth coaching, this will be my first full-time college coaching position. I am looking forward to learning as much as I can, and sharing all of the knowledge I have learned from others. The soccer team has a such a bright future, and I am proud to be a part of the evolution of the Highlanders soccer program."
